Delighted to have exhibited once again in The Horton's Summer Exhibition. The private view was a wonderful opportunity to explore the breadth of work selected for this year's theme, The Music of Life. It's always fascinating to see how each artist interprets the same theme, and this exhibition showcases a rich variety of perspectives.
"This sculpture is made from three Cornish 'Blue Elvan' rocks arranged on a base of Cornish slate. Painted details on the sculpture abstractly represent the moment of impact of crashing waves, the swirling eddies, the foam, and the shifting patterns of the sea. The arrangement of the three rocks creates a visual rhythm, like waves rolling in one after another. Though the materials are solid and still, the composition holds a sense of movement. Inspired by Barbara Hepworth's exploration of natural forms and rhythm, the sculpture reflects the beating repetition of the tide; constantly crashing then quieting. I was also inspired by these words from Helen Dunmore's 'Inside the Wave':
"The waves turned and turned Neither toward nor away from him, Swash and backwash Crossing, repeating, But never the same. At the lip of the wave, foam Stuttered and broke"
